Child-only Health Insurance Now Available Again in Georgia

According to a recent announcement by the Georgia Insurance Commissioner’s office, all health insurance carriers in Georgia are required to offer “child-only” policies again — starting January 1, 2013.

This is very good news for a lot of families who have been forced to keep children on expensive group plans or find alternate coverage for their children. Sometimes parents can’t qualify for a personal plan or find it too costly, yet they want their children to be covered. This new legislation will certainly help many families secure coverage.

As a result of the Affordable Care Act, carriers in Georgia and many other states discontinued the sale of child-only policies in 2010. However, carriers were (and are now) required to cover all pre-existing conditions for children.  Insurance carriers can still increase the rate substantially for children with pre-existing conditions. This aspect of the Affordable Care Act is scheduled to change in January 2014.  There will be many changes coming down the pike in 2014, so it important to stay tuned into the changing insurance climate.
