A Story About Life Insurance Saving Lives

I read a powerful article that someone recently wrote.  You can read it HERE.  This is a story of a young family whose lives were affected by cancer.  This article was written by a widow and she describes how they tried to get her husband life insurance coverage after he was diagnosed with cancer.  They tried multiple times and were finally able to get coverage nine years after the cancer diagnosis.  Then, not long after he got life insurance coverage, tragically the cancer came back and he died less than one year later. I will let you read the story for the details, however, let me take one powerful quote from the article:

What made all the difference to me was that life insurance policy. When I received my check, I cried with relief. That money was my lifeline and I don’t want to think about what would have happened without it. It’s a frightening thought.

It is important to keep on trying to get insurance after you are initially declined.  Carriers tend to be inflexible about certain diseases and they won’t consider covering someone until they have been cancer-free for a certain number of years.  This will vary, depending on the type of cancer and several other related factors.

The only thing that doesn’t seem to makes sense is that the insurance agent had her apply every year, only to get declined.  There really is no need to apply and get declined (as this shows up in the MIB — Medical Information Bureau database). All carriers check with the MIB when considering applications.  Usually, an agent can get a tentative offer for coverage without going through a formal application process.

I don’t want to detract from a such a compelling personal story.  I am always happy to hear how a surviving spouse and child(ren) receive much needed life insurance proceeds.  This story shows the importance of life insurance.
